Marketing terms, defined plainly.

No jargon without context. Every definition here comes from the work we do installing the Marketing OS for B2B founders.

Test and Learn

Test and learn is an approach to marketing that treats activity as a series of deliberate experiments, each designed to produce a usable insight regardless of outcome. It prioritizes structured learning over being right first time, building knowledge that compounds across campaigns.

A test and learn approach changes what failure means. If every campaign is designed to answer a question, a campaign that performs badly still produces something valuable, provided you set it up to teach you. Most businesses run activity without a hypothesis, so a poor result teaches nothing and the same mistakes repeat.

Example:

Running a campaign to answer whether a specific message resonates with a specific segment produces a usable answer either way. Running it to see how it goes produces nothing reusable.

What makes a test and learn approach work?

Starting with a clear hypothesis and a defined question, so the result produces a usable insight whether the activity performed well or badly.

How is this different from normal campaign activity?

Normal activity is judged only by performance. A test and learn approach is designed so that every outcome, including poor ones, adds knowledge that improves the next effort.
