T-Shaped Marketer

A T-shaped marketer has broad working knowledge across many marketing disciplines, represented by the horizontal bar, plus deep expertise in one or two, represented by the vertical stem. The combination suits smaller teams, where someone must coordinate broadly while executing something well.

The T-shaped marketer is usually the right first marketing hire for a smaller business, because they can coordinate across everything while genuinely owning something. The failure mode is hiring a pure specialist who needs a team around them, or a pure generalist who can direct work but not produce it. You need the shape, not just the breadth or the depth.

Example:

Someone who understands positioning, content, paid, and analytics well enough to coordinate them, while personally excelling at one, can run marketing in a small business.

Why does a T-shaped marketer suit a small team?

They can coordinate across the full marketing function while personally delivering real depth in one area, which a pure specialist or pure generalist cannot.

What is the risk of hiring a specialist first?

A specialist needs others to cover the remaining disciplines. Without that support, large parts of the marketing function go unaddressed.
