Marketing Team Structure

Marketing team structure is how marketing responsibilities are organized across people, whether by function, channel, or outcome. The right structure depends on the stage and size of the business. Smaller teams generally need generalists with support, while larger ones can afford specialists.

The structure question most founders face is not how to organize a team, it is whether to build one at all yet. Marketing requires strategy, content, paid, design, and analysis, and one hire cannot cover all five. Deciding which capabilities you need continuously, versus which you can access through a partner, is the real decision beneath the org chart.

Example:

A business needing all five marketing capabilities but able to fund one hire faces a structural gap that no individual, however capable, can close alone.

How should a small business structure marketing?

Usually around one generalist owning coordination, with specialist capabilities accessed through partners or contractors rather than hired individually.

Why does one marketing hire often disappoint?

Marketing requires several distinct skill sets. A single person covers one or two well, leaving genuine gaps that are mistaken for underperformance.
