Marketing terms, defined plainly.

No jargon without context. Every definition here comes from the work we do installing the Marketing OS for B2B founders.

Brand Positioning

Brand positioning is the distinct place your brand occupies in the minds of buyers relative to competitors. It is the perception you deliberately aim to own, shaped by your strategy, messaging, and consistency. Strong brand positioning makes buyers associate you with a specific value or category without you having to explain it.

Brand positioning is what buyers think of you before you say anything, and either you shape it deliberately or the market assigns you a forgettable slot by default. It is the emotional, perceptual layer on top of your strategic positioning: not just what you do, but what you are known for. For a founder, owning a clear position in buyers' minds is what makes marketing cheaper over time.

Example:

Being the firm buyers instinctively think of for owning growth outcomes is brand positioning. If they cannot say what you are known for, the position is unclaimed.

How is brand positioning different from positioning?

Positioning is the strategic choice of market and value. Brand positioning is how that translates into the perception buyers actually hold of you relative to competitors.

Why does brand positioning make marketing cheaper?

When buyers already associate you with a clear value, you spend less explaining and convincing, and you get chosen more readily and questioned less on price.
