The short version
HubSpot attribution can be set up without a data team. Every HubSpot plan records each contact's Original Traffic Source automatically, and that alone answers "where do our leads come from?"
Multi-touch reports depend on your plan. Contact create attribution needs Marketing Hub (or Content Hub) Professional or Enterprise. Deal create and revenue attribution need Marketing Hub Enterprise.
Most HubSpot attribution problems aren't the reports. They're missing UTMs, contacts not linked to deals, empty deal amounts and offline activity that never gets logged.
A founder-friendly setup takes about a month: clean the inputs, add a self-reported source field, build three reports and review them monthly.
HubSpot's attribution documentation is written for admins: properties, association rules, interaction types and sampling limits. Founders want something simpler. Which channels bring in customers, and should we move budget? You can answer that in HubSpot without hiring an analyst, as long as you set it up in the right order.
This guide covers what HubSpot tracks on every plan, what each paid tier adds, the setup checklist, the reports worth building at each level, the mistakes that make HubSpot attribution wrong and a monthly routine that takes under an hour.
What HubSpot tracks on every plan
Every HubSpot account, including the free CRM, sets traffic source properties on each contact. HubSpot describes them as available with "All products and plans" (HubSpot Knowledge Base).
Original Traffic Source: how the contact first found you, grouped into categories such as organic search, paid search, email marketing, organic social, paid social, referrals, AI referrals, other campaigns, direct traffic and offline sources.
Drill-down 1: more context, such as the campaign or social network.
Drill-down 2: the most specific detail, such as the exact URL or email name.
Latest Traffic Source: how the contact most recently arrived.
HubSpot sets the drill-down properties automatically, and they can't be edited by hand. That makes them a reliable, if simple, first-touch attribution record. For most firms under $5M in revenue, Original Traffic Source plus deal amounts is enough to make the first round of budget decisions.
What each HubSpot tier adds
HubSpot's multi-touch attribution reports are tied to your subscription (HubSpot Knowledge Base):
Report | What it answers | Plan needed |
|---|---|---|
Original Traffic Source reports | Where did each contact first come from? | Any plan, including free |
Contact create attribution | Which touches led to new contacts being created? | Marketing Hub or Content Hub Professional or Enterprise |
Deal create attribution | Which touches led to new deals? | Marketing Hub Enterprise |
Revenue attribution | Which touches contributed to closed-won revenue? | Marketing Hub Enterprise |

The multi-touch reports offer several models, including first interaction, last interaction, linear, U-shaped, J-shaped and time decay. W-shaped is available only in deal create and revenue reports, and the full path model only in revenue reports. Our guide to attribution models explained covers what each one does, and our guide to choosing a B2B attribution model explains which fits your sales cycle.
You don't need Enterprise to start. Upgrade when you're spending enough across several channels that the difference between models would change a budget decision.
The setup checklist
HubSpot's reports are only as good as the data going in. Work through these in order:
1. Install the tracking code on every page, including landing pages, blog and booking pages hosted elsewhere.
2. Use HubSpot forms, or connect your forms properly, so submissions create contacts with traffic source data attached.
3. Tag every campaign link with consistent UTM parameters. Inconsistent tags split one channel into several and send paid traffic to "direct".
4. Connect your ad accounts (Google, LinkedIn, Meta) so ad clicks count as interactions.
5. Associate every deal with at least one contact and a company. HubSpot's revenue reports only include closed-won deals with an associated contact and values for amount, create date and close date.
6. Make deal amount and close date required before a deal can move to closed-won.
7. Log offline activity. Events, calls and meetings only count if they're recorded on the contact, and for deal reports, on the deal too.
8. Add a "how did you hear about us?" field to demo and contact forms. Self-reported attribution catches podcasts, referrals and AI assistant recommendations that tracking misses.
// The Rule
Fix the inputs before you buy the reports. Enterprise attribution on messy data just gives you a more detailed wrong answer.
Three reports to build first
Whatever your plan, build these three and put them on one dashboard:
Report | How to build it | The question it answers |
|---|---|---|
New deals by Original Traffic Source | Deals report, grouped by the associated contact's Original Traffic Source, by quarter | Which channels start real sales conversations? |
Closed-won revenue by Original Traffic Source | Same report, filtered to closed-won and summed by amount | Which channels produce revenue, not just leads? |
Self-reported vs tracked source | Contacts with a deal, comparing the self-reported field with Original Traffic Source | Where is tracking missing the real story? |

On Professional, add a contact create attribution report using a U-shaped model to see which content helps convert visitors into contacts. On Enterprise, add a revenue attribution report and compare first interaction, U-shaped and W-shaped side by side. Where the models agree, act with confidence. Where they disagree, that channel is probably playing a supporting role.
Common mistakes that make HubSpot attribution wrong
Contacts not associated with deals. The deal shows no source, so revenue looks like it came from nowhere.
Reps creating contacts by hand from emails or calls, which sets the source to offline and hides the real channel.
Overwriting Original Traffic Source manually to "fix" a record, which clears the drill-downs.
Untagged paid links, so ad traffic lands in "direct" or "referrals".
Imported lists creating thousands of contacts with an offline source, which drowns out real trends.
Judging channels on contacts, not deals. A channel can bring in plenty of contacts and almost no revenue.
Our guide to common attribution mistakes covers the same problems across other tools.
A monthly routine that takes under an hour
15 minutes: check data quality. Deals without contacts, closed-won deals without amounts, contacts with no source.
15 minutes: review new deals and revenue by source for the month and the quarter so far.
15 minutes: compare self-reported answers with tracked sources and note any channel that's being under-credited.
10 minutes: agree one budget decision, such as shifting spend, pausing a campaign or running a test.
Because B2B deals take months to close, judge channels on rolling quarters, not single months. If you also run Google Ads, connect closed-deal data back to it as covered in our guide to attribution in GA4 and Google Ads, and see our wider guide to first-party data attribution for building measurement you own.
When HubSpot isn't enough
HubSpot's built-in reports cover most firms between $1M and $20M in revenue. Consider a dedicated tool when you run many paid channels at scale, need to blend in offline data HubSpot can't see, or want custom models beyond those HubSpot offers. Our comparison of marketing attribution software covers the options at each stage.

Frequently asked questions
Does HubSpot have attribution reporting on the free plan?
The free CRM records Original Traffic Source and its drill-downs on every contact, which supports simple first-touch reporting. Multi-touch attribution reports require a paid Marketing Hub or Content Hub subscription.
Which HubSpot plan includes revenue attribution?
Revenue attribution and deal create attribution reports are part of Marketing Hub Enterprise. Contact create attribution is available on Professional and Enterprise tiers of Marketing Hub or Content Hub.
Why does HubSpot show so much direct or offline traffic?
Usually because links are untagged, contacts were created manually by sales or imported from lists, or tracking code is missing from some pages. Fixing those inputs typically reduces both categories.
Which attribution model should a B2B company use in HubSpot?
Many B2B teams start with U-shaped for contact reports and W-shaped for deal and revenue reports, then compare against first interaction. Agreement between models signals a reliable result.
Can HubSpot track offline events and sales calls?
Yes, if they are logged. Calls and meetings must be recorded on the contact record, and for deal-level reports they also need to be associated with the deal.
