B2B SEO Services: What's Actually Included and What You Should Pay

Two proposals can both say B2B SEO services and describe very different work. Here is the full scope, what a twelve-month program looks like, and how to compare quotes.

The short version

  • B2B SEO services cover five workstreams: technical SEO, keyword and intent research, content, on-page and internal linking, and authority building. AEO now runs across all five.

  • A proposal missing any of the five is a partial program, often priced like a full one.

  • Months 1 to 3 build foundations, months 4 to 6 show early rankings, and months 7 to 12 are where pipeline usually appears.

  • Price follows scope. Compare quotes by what gets delivered each month, not by the headline fee.

  • Measure the services by organic-sourced pipeline, not by the task list.

Two proposals land on your desk. Both say "B2B SEO services". One costs a few hundred dollars a month, the other several thousand. Usually that isn't two prices for the same work. It is two different scopes sharing one label.

This guide breaks down what B2B SEO services should include, what a twelve-month program looks like, and how to check whether a proposal covers all of it. If you are choosing between providers, our guide to choosing a B2B SEO agency covers vetting.

What B2B SEO services actually include

A complete program has five workstreams. Each produces something you can see.

Workstream

What gets done

What you should receive

Technical SEO

Crawlability, indexing, site speed, structured data, site architecture

An audit, a prioritized fix list and a monthly health check

Keyword and intent research

Mapping how your buyers search, with commercial intent first

A keyword map that assigns every target term to one page

Content

Briefs, new pages and articles in clusters, refreshes of existing posts

Published pieces each month, with the brief behind each one

On-page and internal linking

Titles, meta descriptions, headings and links that lead to service pages

A link map showing how each cluster feeds the page that sells

Authority building

Digital PR, earned mentions, partner and industry coverage

A list of mentions and links earned, with where they came from

Two notes on that list.

Authority means earned, not bought. Buying links to influence rankings is listed as link spam in Google's spam policies. A line item like "20 backlinks a month" is a risk you are paying for.

AEO runs across all five. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no separate requirements. What gets added is a layer: answer-first page structure, consistent brand facts across the web, crawler access for tools like ChatGPT, and tracking where AI answers cite you. Our AEO guide covers it in full.

What makes it B2B SEO rather than SEO

The workstreams are the same as in B2C. The targets are not. B2B search volume is small and concentrated in commercial terms such as comparisons, costs and alternatives. Buyers research in committees over months. And success is measured in pipeline, not sessions.

That changes two things about the services. Content has to lead to the service page, through deliberate internal links and conversion paths, because traffic that can't reach the page that sells doesn't become pipeline. And reporting has to run from rankings through to opportunities in the CRM. When we audited 15 B2B websites, none had a link path from blog content to the service page. That gap is a services gap, not a writing gap.

What a twelve-month program looks like

Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says SEOs usually need four months to a year to implement improvements and see a benefit. Here is how that year typically unfolds for a B2B site.

Period

Where the work goes

What you should see

Months 1 to 3

Technical audit and fixes, keyword map, first content clusters, internal linking, tracking

Fixes shipped, content publishing on schedule, pages indexed

Months 4 to 6

Content volume, refreshes, conversion paths on key pages, first authority work

Rankings on low-competition commercial terms, rising non-branded clicks

Months 7 to 12

Scaling winning clusters, harder keywords, digital PR, AI citation tracking

Organic-sourced conversations and pipeline, growing branded search

A newer domain or a crowded category pushes every row later. A site with years of history and few technical problems can move faster.

The KPIs that connect SEO to pipeline

  • Non-branded clicks to commercial pages: From Search Console, filtered to the pages that sell.

  • Rankings for the commercial keyword set: Not every keyword, just the ones mapped to buying intent.

  • Conversion rate on service pages from organic visits.

  • Organic-sourced pipeline and revenue: From the CRM, backed by a "how did you hear about us" field. Our guide to B2B attribution explains why that field matters.

  • Branded search growth: A sign that buyers remember you.

  • AI citations: How often ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews name you for your core questions.

What B2B SEO services cost

Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers found that SEO usually costs $250 to $10,000 a month, with 63% of businesses spending $500 to $5,000, and that 78.2% of providers charge a monthly retainer.

Where a proposal sits in that range mostly reflects which workstreams it funds. A low retainer typically covers technical and on-page work only. Content at volume, with briefs and editing, is usually the largest cost in a B2B program, followed by authority building.

The fastest way to compare two quotes is to list, for each, what arrives every month: fixes shipped, pieces published, links earned, reports delivered. Then divide the fee by the content output. If that per-piece figure can't pay for real editing and sourcing, the content is the part being cut.

In-house SEO vs SEO services vs an SEO agency

Option

Works best when

Watch out for

In-house SEO hire

SEO is a core channel and you can fund a strategist plus writers and developer time

One person rarely covers technical, content and authority work at once

SEO services from freelancers

You have someone in-house who can own strategy and coordinate specialists

Nobody owns the outcome across the pieces

SEO agency

You want all five workstreams run as one program with one accountable team

Scope gaps hidden behind a single monthly fee

Red flags in an SEO services proposal

  • No technical audit in month one.

  • Backlinks sold by the number.

  • Content promised without briefs or an editing step.

  • No keyword map that ties terms to specific pages.

  • Reporting that stops at rankings.

  • Guaranteed positions. Nobody controls Google's results.

How mrktrs delivers B2B SEO services

At mrktrs, SEO and content are the base layer of the Leads Generator. Each month covers:

  • Six to eight blogs.

  • Technical SEO and site health.

  • Topic clustering and interlinking.

  • An SEO-tuned content calendar.

AEO is built into every piece. The keyword strategy starts from the ICP defined in Marketing Foundation, and SEO runs alongside paid acquisition, conversion optimization and sales coordination, so every article has a path to the page that sells and a place in the pipeline report.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in B2B SEO services?

Five workstreams: technical SEO, keyword and intent research, content, on-page and internal linking, and authority building, with AEO applied across them. A proposal should state what each one delivers every month.

How much do B2B SEO services cost?

Most businesses spend between $500 and $5,000 a month on SEO, and B2B programs that include content at volume usually sit toward the top of that band. The scope behind the fee matters more than the fee.

How long do B2B SEO services take to work?

Google puts it at four months to a year. In practice, low-competition commercial terms tend to move first, around months four to six, and organic pipeline builds in the second half of the first year.

Should a company buy SEO services or hire an SEO?

Hire when SEO is a core channel and the budget covers the writers and developer time around that person. Buy services when the company needs all five workstreams running now and can't yet staff them.

How is the ROI of B2B SEO services measured?

By comparing organic-sourced pipeline and revenue over twelve months with total spend over the same period. Rankings and traffic are leading indicators along the way, not the return.
